เดลล์ก่อตั้งเมื่อ ค.ศ. 1984 ช่วงแรกใช้ชื่อว่า "PC's [sic] Limited" โดยไมเคิล เดลล์ ผู้ก่อตั้งซึ่งขณะนั้นยังเป็นนักศึกษาและมีเงินทุนตั้งต้นเพียง 1,000 ดอลลาร์สหรัฐ ไมเคิล เดลล์ทำธุรกิจขายเครื่องโดยใช้วิธีขายตรง ซึ่งส่งผลให้เขารู้ความต้องการที่แท้จริงของลูกค้า
เดลล์ออกแบบคอมพิวเตอร์ของตัวเองเครื่องแรก (Turbo PC) เมื่อค.ศ. 1985 โดยใช้ไมโครโพรเซสเซอร์จากอินเทล บริษัทเปลี่ยนชื่อมาเป็น "Dell Computer Corporation" ในปี ค.ศ. 1988 และเข้าสู่ตลาดหลักทรัพย์
ค.ศ. 1999 เดลล์กลายเป็นบริษัทคอมพิวเตอร์อันดับหนึ่งของโลกแทนที่คอมแพค และเริ่มประกอบธุรกิจอื่นๆ ที่ใกล้เคียง เช่น อุปกรณ์อิเล็คทรอนิกส์สำนักงาน พีดีเอ และเครื่องเล่นเพลงดิจิทัล
